Hello, I’m Hana.

Let’s look beyond a familiar story. Who made the source, and what can it really tell us?

FIND YOUR WAY

Every story has a doorway.

Choose an era, a person, an event or a piece of culture.

THE READING ROOM

Read the stories

Three stories to explore: overseas connections, printmaking and the work behind a lord’s journey.

OUR EDITORIAL APPROACH

Many questions. Careful evidence.

We distinguish what is supported, what is argued, and what remains unknown.

01

Historical claims

Identify well-supported findings and the scope of the prevailing account. Do not mistake a familiar story for a settled fact.

02

Historical sources

Ask who made a record, when and for whom. Explain gaps, bias and the limits of what survives.

03

Interpretations

Show where scholarly explanations differ, cite the evidence, and make the degree of uncertainty clear.

We do not assign one view to an entire nation. We weigh interpretations by evidence, distinguish scholarly debate from weak claims, and do not amplify denialism or hate. Translation preserves uncertainty and explains terms in context.

SOURCES & TRANSPARENCY

Follow the trail.

Sources, dates and image credits accompany each article. Our homepage image is Hokusai’s Great Wave, ca. 1830–32 (The Met, JP1847; CC0). Historical artworks are labelled as artworks rather than photographs.
